'The Orchid's Edge' is a third-person Combat Action platformer where you play as Willow, a Dryad Spirit Reaper who defends the souls of the forest from being harvested by a kind of mechanical invader known as the Clunkers. Using her scythe The Wild Orchid, she protects the cycle of life and death in the forest.

Will you save the souls, or will you fail?

Controls:

JUMP (Space, A)

ATTACK (Left Mouse, X)

DODGE (Right Mouse, B)

LOCK-ON (Middle Mouse, Right Stick Click) [Note: You can switch targets by scrolling the wheel, or by flicking the stick to the left or right]

The Standalone version is the definitive version due to graphical issues, but the Web Version should be fine as well.

UPDATE: Just uploaded a new version of the game that mentions the lock-on mechanic. Sorry about that!

"They'll regret ever having come here."

The Clunkers. Where did they come from?

I can't let the squad know I fw these. -_-

(1 edit)

I love the art style and the combat! But here are some things I encountered:

  • The hearts heal the same amount that the enemies deal (5). Especially if you’re very low on health, then you’ll have to collect at least 6+ of these heart flowers scattering around the map.
  • The platforming is pretty tricky, especially if it’s going so fast that there’s a small window of opportunity to jump into the platform. Else you’ll just fall into the pit that’ll just shoot you straight into the beginning of the level instead of having checkpoints (I’m glad falling into pits didn’t suck away your health. I’d be mad if it does).
  • The Wizard Heartles- er Clunkers are ANNOYING to deal with!! They have little cooldown between shooting and firing at the player. Even worse if there’s two of them, and the dash system where it has this weird dashing and then stopping in midair before falling. This prioritizes into running away from the enemies so that you can deal with them one at a time, because these enemies can go high above you and you can’t hit them.
  • Wait, there’s no pause menu?

However, it is pretty enjoyable! I got pretty used to the combat because of my Kingdom Hearts knowledge.

I like the design and vibe a lot. Unfortunately combat system feel clunky.

I don't feel that much in control and it's a but frustrating to move precisely or when I get sent back to the start

I like the combat and mobility, but they could add a minimap, and as a detail to fix, for the wait animation after dodging, I would reduce that wait time for more fluid combat or exploration ✨

The sounds are atrocious

I love the game, epecially the dashing feautre. but can you add chekcpoints, its annoying for me to run from across the map.

Also for some reason, the heart for healing dont always heal,

(+1)

could there please be like a checkpoint at the start, i feel like such a noob for asking this :')                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                 i have a love hate relationship with those little wizard floaters, i get it tho, run (wasd), jump(space), hit (keypad

agreed.

great game would play for fun

(+3)

Somebody already posted my critique, so I'll just say I enjoyed this demo. Great job!!!

(+2)

got a new PC and this is the first game I played, I'm glad that many people know to this game now:D (sorry for my English, I have no respect for this language)

(+1)

I’m glad! Thank you for enjoying it.

(+2)

Simple yet fun! 10/10 even as a “beta”.

(+3)

achei legal espero pode joga uma vesao completa seja em um pc o console

(+2)

I think that on the web version it is Laggy, it's not playable on the device I'm using. I think you could make a mode where I can be played on small devices making it more playable on the web.

(+2)

Please tell me that you're planning to build upon this because this little demo is absolutely fantastic! I would gladly buy it if it was a full game. Charming visuals, nice audio, excellent level design, with some work around the rough edges (i.e. too much stunlock from the flying enemies) and some additional features such as perhaps some more advanced moves for an expanded moveset and you got a 10/10 game. The work here has a lot of love and passion in it and it shows.

(+1)

Well, visuals and music are fine, but what's wrong with controls?
There is too much frames after completing dodge or recieving damage when character is just finishing her transition into idle animation and you have no control of her movement except fall controls. That makes dodge much less usefull in combat, because while character can't obey it's commands before finishing all animations, enemies are already got near and trying to hit again. Also why can't I keep playing after collecting 50 souls? It would be nice to let the player finish level on 100%.

very cool

Hey CornflowerBlue,

You were my Gem of the Stream! Check it out:

What a beautiful looking game, which I can't believe runs in my browser! The character design is fantastic and the gameplay is simple and fun. It would be cool the see this expanded upon and have more story about willow and her adventures. Great work and all the best with your future games!

I have created a Discord as a space for game devs to talk about their experiences and share their games. Would love to have you join!

Very cute aesthetic, really digging it!

(2 edits) (+1)

Cute! This game has a lot of potential but the WebGL build is a bit uncomfortable to play, when I click it highlights the whole game and makes it blue, and the camera seems to be drifting slightly if I don’t move my mouse which made me really dizzy. The aesthetic is really cute, reminds me of Celeste 64! The vertical momentum preservation was really fun.

(+1)

How do you pick up the heart flowers?

Whack them with your weapon

(+1)

I love this game , it looks so cute and enjoyable but when i fall of the world the game just spawns me at the start maybe you should add a checkpoint or something like that, have a nice day!

(+1)

Funnily enough, I can't "click start." I (keyboard user) tried all of the buttons mentioned in the description, but I never progressed to the game.

(+1)

You have to press enter, it should really clarify

(+1)

good game

(+1)

por favor faça algum tipo de parry pro coringa

this game have a much potential!!!

(+1)

For a demo it shows potential, I did try playing with a mouse and keyboard which is clearly not intended, I imagine it would be a lot smoother with a controller, apart from that, if I could make a suggestion, add a shop where the player can buy upgrades, maybe with those blue tear crystal things, right now their only purpose is to collect them to win the level.

(+2)

Excellent action platformer game, much above my expectations.
(+1)

Nicely done platformer. I would consider delete joystick keys if player plays at PC. Its not necessery showing buttons from joystick at all.
Also when player fall of from the clif/platform i would consider to take dame to player and gives him better spawn, starting from beggining is anyoing.

But the sounds are greate, graphic is coasy. Keep it up i knida like it.

if you get hit in the air, you get back your dash

(1 edit) (+1)

(+2)

Really cool game!

(+2)

I really had fun with the game it's a great game really with some weird happenings here and there but that doesn't really matter would love to see it become something bigger

(+3)

Well that was cute and fun! I love seeing more combat platformers in the world and this was definitely a basic one but the aesthetic is adorable.

Keep up the good work, lads! Cornflower, I'm very eager to see more of 'Lightspeed Lina'.

(+2)

Amazing base here to build off of if you wanted to expand this concept further!!!! There's only a few things I think need tweaking gameplay-wise:

1) When you dash there's wayyyy too long of a delay on your next accepted input. If you are fighting two wizard guys and get hit after an air dash, you get stun-locked until you die because you can't do any other inputs after your dash; you float there for a REALLY long time.

2) Similarly, there's too long of a delay after an attack before you can move again.

3) Camera movement is extremely sensitive. Which might be okay for some people, but a slider to control that would be huge.

Defo not intentional, but you can deal with the attack delay, and possibly dash delay, by spamming jump and attack, cancelling the animation.

(+1)

Bug report: The game has a mechanic where when you attack, you stay in the air for a while until your attack ends, but jumping cancels the attack animation, allowing you to walk freely through the air.

(+1)

please make this a full game!!! i love the character designs and level layout! the only few problems i have is that the heart plants don't heal much and the camera sensitivity is too high. I suggest that you make the dodge not come to a complete stop in the air and add a sprint button to add more movement tech.

(+2)

thanks for the comments guys, it’s pretty cool this entry still gets played even after all this time. 👋
